Student Spotlight: Stories from UM Event Participants

Behind every event at University Malaya (UM) are inspiring stories of students who’ve discovered their passions, built connections, and grown in unexpected ways. Discovering a Passion for Coding

Azim, a second-year computer science student, was hesitant to join a hackathon because he felt he lacked experience. Encouraged by a friend, he decided to give it a try. During the 48-hour event, Azim worked with a team to develop a mobile app that aimed to reduce food waste. Despite the intense schedule, he found the process exhilarating.

“I didn’t know I had it in me to work on a project like this,” Azim shared. “The mentorship and collaboration during the hackathon showed me that coding isn’t just about writing programs—it’s about solving real-world problems.”

Since that event, Azim has taken up more coding challenges, joined tech clubs, and even landed an internship at a startup, all because he discovered his passion for coding at a UM event.

Building Lifelong Mentorships

For Aisha, a final-year economics student, attending a career fair was a pivotal moment. She approached a booth hosted by an alumna who worked in her dream industry—banking. What started as a casual conversation turned into a mentorship that guided Aisha through her career planning.

“She not only gave me advice on internships and interviews but also helped me understand the kind of skills and mindset I needed to succeed in banking,” Aisha explained. “I wouldn’t be where I am now without her guidance.”

This connection eventually led Aisha to secure a competitive internship, and she continues to maintain a strong relationship with her mentor.

Celebrating Diversity and Creativity

UM events also highlight the university’s rich diversity and creative talents. Ravi, an international student from India, found his place in the UM community through a cultural festival. Representing his home country, Ravi performed a traditional dance for the first time in Malaysia.

“The applause and support I received from the audience were overwhelming,” Ravi said. “It helped me feel at home and proud of my heritage.”

Ravi now actively participates in organizing cultural events, helping other international students share their traditions and connect with the broader UM community.
